What is integrative medicine?

Identify and Treat Brain Disorders at the Source

Integrative medicine approaches diagnosis and treatment from a multisystem perspective. At Northern Medical, we integrate various medical disciplines, to determine which pathways are best for each patient. We have an array of care providers who work together as a team. They are experts in conventional medicine, functional medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, lifestyle medicine, naturopathic medicine, mental health, and more.
We examine health concerns from an intersectional perspective and discover the root causes of a presenting problem, including structural, metabolic, hormonal, genetic, nutritional, emotional, mental, environmental, and even spiritual systems.

What are the advantages of integrative medicine?

Personal health problems are nuanced, and medical treatment options are not one-size-fits-all. By assessing our patients’ health from multiple data points, integrative medicine allows us to practice precision medicine, adapting treatments for the individual.
Science increasingly shows that conventional drug treatments, while they work best for some individuals, do not work well for others. Just like fitting a quality suit, it’s best to make sure your healthcare is “tailored” uniquely to you.

Is integrative medicine

Our Holistic Approach

Here are some of the treatments we use at Northern Medical. We are continually updating, revising, and integrating new therapies that work to produce the best possible results. Here are some of the treatment modalities:

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese approach to healing that involves stimulating specific points on the body with fine needles. Acupuncture treats the body as a whole system, which means that imbalances in one part can contribute to dysregulation in other areas.

Chinese medicine informs us that proper balance and smooth qi (energy) flow is critical to health. Qi flows through our bodies along channels (called “meridians”). Blocked or stagnated qi can cause pain and other symptoms. Northern Medical thus offers acupuncture treatment to open the blocked energy channels, facilitate the flow of qi, and re-establish patients’ energetic balance. The therapy also helps boost your body’s natural healing abilities.

An acupuncture session is often very relaxing. Research has linked acupuncture therapy to better immune function, improved nerve system, greater energy levels, reduced pain, an overall feeling of revitalization, and even cosmetic beauty enhancement!

Numerous people credit acupuncture for helping them decrease reliance on drugs, particularly in pain management and many other areas. Medicare and most private insurance now cover acupuncture treatments for pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea, and sometimes addiction.

Advanced nutrient therapy uses nutrients rather than medications for correcting biochemical imbalances caused by genetic predisposition and environmental stressors. Based on a half-century of scientific research by medical scientists, advanced nutrient therapy is an excellent example of modern epigenetic medicine and has successfully treated and benefited thousands of patients diagnosed with various chronic mental and physical health conditions.

Individualized and advanced nutrient therapy utilizes genetic and urine tests, and blood work that uncover the biochemical imbalances responsible for one’s illness. Biochemical imbalances can cause all kinds of advanced diseases and even brain dysfunction by affecting communication across the body’s cells and neurons. In many cases, nutrients–rather than medications–can treat these conditions more effectively and safely.

Ayurvedic medicine comes from India and has helped people stay healthy for thousands of years. Some of its applications include yoga practices, principles for living, and dietary planning.

Ayurvedic diet planning centers on your unique body type. After analyzing your physical and personality characteristics, your provider will help you find foods that naturally enhance your well-being.

India is known for its spices. Indian cuisine is one of the most complex on the planet. But what many people don’t realize is that Indian food is natural medicine. Modern science continues to discover the many traditional Indian spices that have potent medicinal benefits for the entire mind and body. For instance, turmeric is fantastic at reducing inflammation. Ginger is excellent for giving motivation and warming the body. The list goes on.

Let us be your guide to the rich world of Ayurveda. There are many relationships between physical and mental health–the foods we eat, and our lifestyle and environment can weaken or strengthen our natural rhythms. Our Ayurvedic expert will help you develop simple strategies that can dramatically boost your immune function, mental acuity, and life satisfaction.

Like acupuncture, herbal medicine formulas are part of traditional Chinese medical treatment. They have proven to be safe and effective over thousands of years.

Many of the herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) are beneficial in helping you holistically rebalance your body in ways that carry fewer side effects.

Chinese herbs often differ from pharmacological solutions in restoring the body’s function. At the same time, some modern drugs may create side effects elsewhere in the body. For these reasons, herbal medicine can be an appealing solution for those seeking remedies that cooperate more naturally and harmoniously with the body.

Functional medicine is a rapidly growing field that emphasizes treating your whole system, not just your symptoms. We diligently assess levels of function across different domains of health (for example, mobility, sleep quality, and digestion), survey biomarkers (such as hormones, genes, or inflammation), and get to know your lifestyle and preferences.

We can use this data to shed light on your strengths and vulnerabilities. This helps to identify less obvious contributing factors to health conditions and get to the root causes of illness.

Issues with nutrition, stressors, a build-up of toxins, allergic reactions, genetic factors, and gut microbia (the “right” and “wrong” bacteria in your digestive system) are the typical suspects.

Thus, functional medicine can provide valuable insights and simple solutions to chronic, hard-to-treat problems.

Lifestyle medicine is a proactive and future-oriented medical specialty based on the idea that the body can heal itself when offending factors are removed.

Modern medicine increasingly realizes that “the equipment you come with”–our genes–accounts for less and less as we age. Instead, lifestyle factors and our daily choices dramatically impact our health and can even make the difference between “turning on or off” the expression of hereditary diseases.

Lifestyle medicine focuses on planning for optimal health and aging across your lifespan. Creating the proper habits for your body now can help you thrive and enhance your quality of life.

Psychotherapy emphasizes the use of behavioral therapy or talk therapy for emotional or mental health treatment.

In cases where traditional therapy is incorporated into treatment, Northern Medical providers manage and monitor psychiatric medication uses to maintain maximum efficacy with minimum side effects. We carefully select medication based on your genetic makeup, neurotransmitter imbalances, and lifestyle.

Life coaching is a part of wellness which focuses on overcoming mental obstacles (“ruts”), losing bad habits, cement powerful, positive ones, and start a new page in your life. Our specialists come prepared with a wealth of resources to help you make progress faster, find inspiration, and “hack” your inner strengths for success.

When we undergo traumatic events in life, we naturally suppress or repress them to the unconscious as a way of coping and moving on.

However, physical and emotional memories remain and tend to surface from time to time. When they surface, the symptoms manifest as anxiety, behavioral avoidance or aggression, or even as physical impairment.

We offer psycho-energetic therapy (PET) to help reduce the body’s reaction to emotional and physical trauma.

TMS is a noninvasive treatment for depression that has benefitted millions of people.  FDA approved since 2008, TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain that are underactive in patients who experience depression.

TMS is an effective therapy for patients who have not benefited from antidepressant medication.  Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances cover TMS treatment for resistant depression.

The brain’s electrical activity is directly connected to how we think, feel, and act.  Quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) or “brain mapping” analyzes this electrical activity and reports information on how the brain performs in real time.

Neuromodulation uses data from qEEG to help with an extensive range of mental and brain dysfunctions, including :

  • anxiety
  • insomnia
  • bipolar
  • schizophrenia
  • PTSD
  • OCD

Since the brain has the fantastic ability to reprogram itself, neurofeedback therapy aims to change the way the brain responds to certain stimuli .

Neurofeedback measures a patient’s electric brainwave activity. When brain activity changes in the direction desired by the neurofeedback protocol, a positive “reward,” typically in the form of a visual display and/or sound, is given to the patient. When this process repeats multiple times, the brain experiences neurofeedback training, similar to how the body experiences a workout.

Neurofeedback is a nondrug and noninvasive therapy. It is time-tested and very safe. Both the FDA and American Pediatrics Academy have endorsed neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback has been found clinically useful in treating numerous brain disorders, including:

  • attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD)
  • stress and anxiety
  • traumatic brain injury
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • sleep disorders
  • memory deficits
  • depression
  • high-functioning autism spectrum disorders

Moreover, neurofeedback training has helped professionals in various industries for training peak mental performance. The ability to keep the mind focused, flexible, clear, and sharp and achieve inner calm in the face of stressors is necessary to achieve optimal performance.

Spravato Esketamine is the first FDA-approved nasal spray medication for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) or major depressive disorder with acute suicidal ideation or behavior (MDSI).

Spravato targets the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NDMA) receptor and works differently than currently available oral antidepressants. Initial treatment is administered over 12 weeks and requires 1-2 visits per week.

Physical therapy is used to improve quality of life by restoring functional movement such as walking, standing, or even moving different parts of the body.

Our staff includes an integrated team of seasoned Western medical doctors, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctors, and physical therapists. As such, our providers draw on many physical therapy schools and use select physical therapy techniques that help you thrive.

Personal training from our fitness professionals will uncover what your body is capable of doing and guide you to living a healthy lifestyle.

Many of us have unconsciously learned movements and postures that make it difficult to build strength, or even worse induce injury.  Our approach centers on ensuring you know how to place weight, balance, and move muscles for optimal health.  We are able to help you improve flexibility, strength, endurance, and empower your mind to go further than you thought possible.

Our fitness professionals take a one-of-a-kind approach to tap into your own strength and personal power.  So no matter what level of fitness you are at, we can help make your fitness goals a reality.

Proper nutrition contributes to our energy levels, immune system regulation, healing outcomes, body shape, the aging process, and mental acuity.

Working with a Northern nutritional coach, you will be empowered to make intelligent, personalized decisions based on a comprehensive assessment of your unique characteristics and priorities. Let us help you find supplements that work so that you can save valuable time, money, and energy.

We design simple meals to work into your busy schedule and dramatically boost your well-being. You may also learn things about your body–what to avoid and what to seek out–that you never knew existed. Your body will thank you!

IV (intravenous) nutrient therapy is a popular new approach to correcting biochemical imbalances in the body that involves delivering vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients directly into the bloodstream.

There is a limit to how much your body can absorb when taking vitamins orally.  IV nutrient therapy, on the other hand, quickly delivers a high concentration of nutrients to your bloodstream. As a result, your organ system can get the ingredients it needs to begin recovery as soon as possible.

This therapy solution is famous for a variety of reasons :

  • Amino acids deliver a natural energy boost that lasts without the “crash” following sugar and caffeine.
  • Antioxidants, like vitamin C, fend off free radicals, which create oxidative stress that accelerates aging
  • Several infusion ingredients treat “brain fog” and “hangover.”
  • Some cocktails combat weakened immune systems
